Pop Culture & Icons
By WorldClubDirectory Team | Pop Culture & Icons Series – November 2025
Over 40 million households watched the first season in the first month alone. It spawned two spin-offs, changed how the world sees Colombia and Mexico forever, and turned Wagner Moura into a global star overnight. This is the definitive, no-holds-barred story of Narcos — from a crazy idea in a Los Angeles writers’ room to one of Netflix’s biggest franchises ever.
2012 – Chris Brancato (writer of Hoodlum and Species II) is in a Los Angeles coffee shop when he reads a Rolling Stone article about DEA agents Steve Murphy and Javier Peña. The line that changed everything: “We were just two gringos trying to catch the most dangerous man in the world.”
Brancato calls Brazilian director José Padilha (Elite Squad). Padilha, who grew up during Brazil’s military dictatorship, immediately sees the parallel: “The drug war is the new Cold War.” They pitch Netflix with a radical idea: a bilingual series told 50% in Spanish, narrated by a real DEA agent, shot on location in Colombia.
Netflix greenlights 10 episodes for $25 million — at the time, their most expensive original series ever.
Premiered August 28, 2015. 10 episodes. Real DEA agents Steve Murphy and Javier Peña serve as consultants and narrators.
Wagner Moura gains 18 kg and learns Spanish in 4 months to play Pablo Escobar. Boyd Holbrook (Murphy) and Pedro Pascal (Peña) become overnight stars.
Filming in Medellín was so dangerous that Netflix had to pay “war tax” to local gangs for protection.
Escobar escapes La Catedral prison → Los Pepes → rooftop death December 2, 1993. The final scene — Wagner Moura lying dead on the roof — is watched by 15 million people in the first week.
Focus shifts to Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela (“The Chess Player”) and the Cali cartel. New cast: Damián Alcázar, Alberto Ammann, Francisco Denis. Peña becomes the lead character.
Spin-off created after Escobar’s death left no more Colombia story. Season 1: Kiki Camarena murder (1985) – Diego Luna as Félix Gallardo. Season 2: El Chapo rise – Alejandro Edda steals every scene. Season 3: Tijuana, Juárez, Sinaloa wars – ends with Amado Carrillo Fuentes’ death (1997).
- 3 seasons + 3 Narcos Mexico seasons = 60 episodes - Viewed by over 100 million households worldwide - 3 Golden Globe nominations - Spawned “Narcos tourism” in Medellín (now legal and regulated) - Made “Plata o Plomo” a worldwide catchphrase
